Understand the role of the Butantan Institute in Brazil
Did you recognize that Instituto Butantan is that the main producer of immunobiologicals in our country? he's liable for an outsized percentage of the assembly of hyperimmune sera and an outsized volume of the national production of vaccine antigens, which structure the vaccines utilized in the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health.
A little of history
In 1899, an epidemic of plague that occurred from the port of Santos - on the coast of Sao Paulo - led the state public administration to make a laboratory for the assembly of antipestant serum linked to the Bacteriological Institute - known today as Instituto Adolpho Lutz. This laboratory was installed at Fazenda Butantan, within the west of the town of Sao Paulo, and, in February 1901, it had been recognized as an autonomous institution under the name of Instituto Serumtherápico.
The concern to disseminate science widely, the Institute's activities and therefore the production of serums and vaccines has always been present, which guaranteed the popularity of the international community.
More than a century after its foundation, the Butantan Institute is an impressive biomedical research facility, which integrates scientific and technological research, production of immunobiologicals and technical-scientific dissemination, seeking the permanent updating and integration of its resources and, with that, innovation.
During the pandemic
When the virus arrived in Brazil in early 2020, the institute created a selected portal that aimed to supply information to the whole population, whether in text or video form.
To reduce the impacts of influenza on our health system - freeing up space for actions against COVID-19 - the institute anticipated and increased the assembly of the flu vaccine. the amount of doses was increased and therefore the campaign happened before the stipulated date.
In April, the institute received a shipment of 726,000 tests to detect infection by SRS-CoV-2. additionally to the brilliant role in health management, the laboratories have gained the required certification to hold out the detection tests and participate within the state system of study.
But, after all, what does the Butantan Institute do?
Basically, the Butantan Institute develops basic research and studies within the areas of biology and biomedicine related - either directly or indirectly - to public health. Among the activities they are doing, we highlight:
Collaborates with the development of worldwide health - along side other Brazilian agencies;
Development of basic and applied research projects, like studies on venomous animals, pathogens, innovation and modernization of the assembly and control processes of immunobiologicals, additionally to clinical, therapeutic and epidemiological studies associated with accidents caused by venomous animals;
Conducting scientific missions through Unicef, UN and therefore the World and Pan American Health Organization;
It offers several extension courses - aiming at training professionals who can increase public health;
Empowers students with their internship at the extent of scientific initiation and among others.
Serums and Vaccines
Currently, additionally to CoronaVac, the Butantan Institute produces about 6 vaccines and 13 serums.
In the case of serums, those in production today are the antibotropic and anticrotalic; antilaquético; anticrotálico; antielapidic; anti-arachnid; antiscorpionic; anti-diphtheric; anti-tetanus; anti-rabies; antibotulinic AB; antibotulin E; antilonomic.
Among vaccines , we will highlight:
Rabies vaccine (in Vero cells)
Hepatitis B adsorbed vaccine
DR (children's pair and adult pair);
DTP;
Flu's vacine.
All these vaccines and serums are products intended for the Ministry of Health - that's, they're not inputs which will be purchased.
As for vaccines, Instituto Butantan developed a tetravalent of dengue, being 100% Brazilian. it's within the testing phase, but clinical studies show excellent results.
Visit the Butantan Institute
For those that are curious, the park is open from Monday to Sunday (from 7 am to five pm) and has free admission. If you would like to go to the museums, admission is paid and costs around R $ 6.00 - which allows you to go to the Historical, Microbiology and Biological Museum.
Visits aren't allowed within the factories, where the assembly of serums and vaccines takes place - thanks to several strict rules of sterility of the environments.
